In the early 1970s, Buckingham was going through a rough patch, struggling to gain recognition for his work. Despite being in the industry since 1966, he had only found temporary gigs as a touring or session musician. It was a challenging time, and his career prospects seemed uncertain.

Around the same time, Don Everly, one half of the legendary Everly Brothers, was also facing artistic struggles. After deciding to pursue a solo career, Everly found himself in a difficult position, trying to establish his identity outside of the successful duo.
Through a connection with songwriter Warren Zevon, Buckingham learned of an opportunity to work with Everly on his first solo tour. It seemed like a golden chance, but little did he know, it would be a heart-wrenching experience.
"I got the gig as a guitar player," Buckingham recalled in a 2008 interview. "But Don was struggling with the idea of being Don Everly on his own. It was understandable, but the pressure was immense. Playing in clubs, we'd get yelled at to play their old hits. It was heartbreaking."
After a few cities, Everly called it quits, unable to continue. Buckingham's experience with Everly was a devastating one, but it didn't deter him from pursuing his dreams.
And this is the part most people miss: Buckingham's resilience paid off. Despite the early setbacks, he went on to join Fleetwood Mac, a redemption story that speaks to the power of perseverance.
