The owner, Mr. Magowan, was fined over £1,000 for placing unsafe food on the market and failing to comply with food hygiene regulations. The charges against Mr. Magowan were extensive, covering a period from December 1, 2020, to June 3, 2025. During this time, the filling station sold unsafe food, including Pinkerton Bacon, Galtee Ham, and BBQ Chicken Wraps. Additionally, the store kept sandwiches, wraps, and coleslaw at temperatures above 8 degrees Celsius, which could have supported the growth of pathogenic microorganisms or the formation of toxins. The station also displayed cooked hot dogs for sale at temperatures below 63 degrees Celsius, further compromising food safety. The ABC Council's Environmental Health Officers played a crucial role in this case. They conducted remedial checks and found that the business had made significant improvements, raising its hygiene report from a one to a four. However, the judge, District Judge Michael Ranaghan, emphasized the importance of adhering to food hygiene regulations, especially in light of the potential health risks. He asked Mr. Magowan to consider moving a sink into the food preparation area to enhance hygiene standards. The judge's concern was justified, as the business had only recently started working with food, and the owner admitted to being new to food hygiene regulations. Judge Ranaghan acknowledged the business's thriving status and the employment it provided, but he also stressed the court's duty to protect the public. The filling station was fined £300 for the first offence and £150 for each subsequent offence. Additional costs included a summons fee, offenders levy, and counsel costs. The judge's decision sends a clear message that food safety is non-negotiable and that businesses must adhere to regulations to protect public health.
