While we generally assume a voter's choice is their own, a concerning trend has emerged from the recent Gorton and Denton by-election, with watchdog groups flagging what they describe as "extremely high" instances of family voting. This practice of family voting has become a more serious concern with the introduction of the Ballot Secrecy Act 2023. This legislation effectively made it a criminal offense to be in or near a polling booth with another person for the purpose of influencing their vote. It's designed to protect the sanctity of the individual's ballot.
John Ault, the director of Democracy Volunteers, released a statement after the polls closed, expressing his group's shock. He claimed that their observers witnessed the highest levels of family voting in their 10-year history of election observation in the UK. He contrasted this by-election with a recent one in Runcorn and Helsby, where family voting was noted in only 12% of polling stations and affected approximately 1% of voters. In stark contrast, in Gorton and Denton, Democracy Volunteers reported observing family voting in a staggering 68% of polling stations, impacting about 12% of the voters they observed.
To gather their data, four observers visited 22 out of the 45 polling stations in the constituency, spending between 30 to 45 minutes at each. Across these 22 observed stations, volunteers flagged potential family voting in 15 of them. They monitored a sample of 545 individuals casting their votes and recorded a total of 32 instances of family voting, with one polling station alone showing nine such cases.
And this is the part most people miss... The official response from the by-election's returning officer has been one of rejection. They pointed out that their staff, trained to detect undue influence, reported no instances of family voting. A spokesperson for the returning officer stated, "Polling station staff are trained to look out for any evidence of undue influence on voters. No such issues have been reported today." They further questioned why Democracy Volunteers didn't raise their concerns during polling hours, when immediate action could have been taken, especially given the presence of a central hub and police at every polling station. The spokesperson expressed disappointment that these claims were only made after the polls had closed.
The Electoral Commission, which oversees elections in the UK, acknowledged the report, reiterating that electoral offenses are a police matter. They encourage anyone who believes an offense has occurred to report it to the police, noting that the Code of Practice for electoral observers allows them to bring potential irregularities to the attention of officials on the spot.
Political figures have also weighed in. Anna Turley, Chair of the Labour Party, described the reports as "extremely worrying and concerning," emphasizing that this is not what we want to see in our democracy and that the evidence needs to be examined. Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party, agreed that any wrongdoing should be investigated but also highlighted the council's statement that no issues were reported. However, Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, took a more pointed stance, linking the claims to concerns about the "integrity of the democratic process in predominantly Muslim areas" and calling the election a "victory for sectarian voting and cheating." While the party's chair, David Bull, conceded that the practice might not have altered the final result, he stressed the importance of ensuring it doesn't happen again.
